Open a box of tapes that’s been in a Florida garage since the ‘90s and you’ll know the smell immediately: damp cardboard, old library, something faintly sweet. That’s not “old tape smell.” Magnetic tape itself is nearly odorless. What you’re smelling is biology — mold colonies digesting the binder that holds the magnetic particles to the plastic ribbon.
In our studio, roughly one in five boxes that comes through the door has some level of mold activity. In South Florida it’s not a question of if but when: sustained humidity above 65% is all a spore needs, and an un-air-conditioned garage spends most of the year well above that.
Take the cassette to bright light. Look through the top window at the tape pack — the wound spool of tape itself — and check the exposed edges. Healthy tape shows a clean, mirror-smooth surface. Mold shows up as white or gray patches along the edges of the wind, often in a starburst or archipelago pattern.
Two rules while you inspect. First: don’t press play. A single pass through a VCR grinds spores into the full length of the ribbon and contaminates the machine for every tape after it. Second: don’t open the shell or wipe anything. Dry mold flakes; disturbed, it airborne-spreads to the rest of the box.
White, powdery, dry-looking blooms are the common case — surface colonies that a professional cleaning pass can remove completely before transfer. Our bench process runs the full ribbon through a controlled cleaning rig, twice, before it ever touches a playback deck.
Black, brown, or oily-looking residue is rarer and more serious: it usually means moisture reached the binder layer and hydrolysis (“sticky-shed”) has started alongside the mold. Those tapes often need thermal treatment before they’ll play at all. Saveable — but the window is closing, and every humid month matters.
Usually, yes. Caught at the white-bloom stage, our save rate is excellent — the overwhelming majority of moldy tapes we treat transfer with no visible damage. Even black-residue tapes are more often saveable than not, though heavy hydrolysis can leave dropouts in the worst sections. The honest exceptions: tapes stored wet (flood victims that never dried) and tapes someone tried to play moldy.
Seal suspect tapes in a zip-top bag — one bag per tape if you can — and get them out of the humid space. Don’t refrigerate, don’t rice, don’t hair-dryer. Then get them to someone with a cleaning bench. If that’s us: mold assessment is part of every quote, cleaning is included in the $18 per-tape price, and we’ll tell you honestly if a tape isn’t worth treating.
Please don’t. Alcohol on the wound pack only reaches the edges, spreads spores inward, and can attack the binder. Proper cleaning runs the full ribbon through a bench rig — edge cleaning is cosmetic, not a fix.
Bag them, don’t play them, and send them to the bench. De-molding is included in every quote.
